Here are some methods and steps that can be used to treat back pain at home and perhaps even be a cure.

Movement and exercise is a must.  If you stay in bed for a long period of time you will begin to feel it in your back.  You must remember that the back is quite remarkable in that it is designed to be strong, as it must keep our entire frame upright for very long periods of time.  It is essential to get adequate rest but too much lying down is not good and could even cause the muscles to ache.  Some exercise is certainly necessary to keep your back supple and relaxed and free from muscular pain.  The sensible way is to maintain regular movement of the body. It is not necessary to overdo physical exercise.  Gentle exercise is sufficient as you do not want to exacerbate the level of pain.  You should always get the go ahead from your doctor before undergoing any kind of physical exercise.

Another important aim should be the maintaining of a healthy and strong body.  There are very good aerobic exercises that do not put any strain on your back or muscles at all.  An excellent aerobic exercise is that of swimming.  This is a way to exercise without any stress on the joints and yet it keeps the muscles supple and working.  Swimming is excellent for building up the body’s endurance.  A strong and healthy back will eliminate unnecessary pain. 

Always consider your muscle strength and flexibility.  Increase in flexibility of your hips and upper legs will create the proper pelvic bone alignment.  This is very necessary to improve the condition of your back and make you feel relaxed after having completed your exercise regime. If you do only several simple exercises but on a regular basis, you will see an improvement in the overall performance of your pain free back.

Most people know that smoking is bad for your overall health.  Not many people are aware that smoking is very bad for the back.  The practice of smoking lowers the level of oxygen in the spinal tissues.  This may very well be a hindrance in the healing of your muscles in this particular area.  Smoking also lowers muscle activity.

Nowadays, many of us are overweight.  This most certainly does not help keep your back in shape.  Excess body fat puts a great deal of stress on the back, and the more weight you put on the more pain you will experience.  There is no doubt that by losing unwanted weight your back will improve considerably. 

It is also very important to have a correct posture.  Slouching and sitting incorrectly will cause aches and pain in your back.  A bad posture is simply a bad habit that can be changed.  If you have to sit for a long time use a footstool.  If you place your feet on a footstool it reduces the pressure on your lower back.  If you use a chair that is curved then place a cushion behind your back to help keep your spine from curving. Make it a habit to walk with your shoulders back.  Correct posture keeps unnecessary aches and pain away.
