One cause of neck pain and headaches is tension. Why does tension cause neck pain and headaches?

One of the most common types of headache is the tension headache, which usually occurs because of tension in the muscles in the area, usually caused by stress. Migraines can also cause tension headaches.

If you are painting a ceiling, your head is in an unnatural position for some time as you paint it. This may also cause a tension headache. Fatigue, eye strain, caffeine, alcohol, and even a sinus infection can also cause tension headaches.

If you do a lot of typing, or are in a closed room, tension headaches can occur. Staring at a computer screen for extended periods, or sitting in an unnatural position at work can also cause tension headaches. There are many causes for tension headaches, stress probably being the major cause. To keep from getting tension headaches, try to relieve as much stress as possible from your work environment. Make sure that you take frequent breaks, if possible. Don't smoke excessively, watch the caffeine, and try to not to stare at the computer screen for extended periods, and occasionally look away.

Some illnesses can also cause tension headaches. Keep healthy, get proper rest, and try to relax when not at work. If you should wear glasses, wear them, and perhaps you should get a special pair of glasses for working at the computer to avoid eye strain. If you spend time typing, make sure you type at a comfortable angle.

Never work with your hands above or below a level that is comfortable for you over time. Also, make sure that your monitor is not making you strain for a position to look at it comfortably. If you are forced to look at a level that is higher or lower than you feel comfortable at, adjust the monitor.

Anything that you do to keep yourself in an almost neutral position can eliminate tension in the neck, which may cause neck pain and headaches. If you feel any type of strain, stop and take a short break from what you are doing and adjust your position or whatever you need to alleviate any tension you feel in your body.

Sitting comfortably, not staring at the monitor, or taking a short break if you feel tense is the best way to keep from getting neck pain and headaches. Maintaining your overall health is also a good way to keep from getting headaches in general. Allergies can also cause headaches. If you suffer from allergies, you might want to take some OTC allergy medication during high pollen times, or something for your specific allergy.

One sure way to reduce stress is to really relax when you arrive home from work. I knew someone that would go out to his woodshop and work on projects to relieve his work stress. Whatever you can do to relieve your stress level might just keep you from neck pain and headaches.
